— By Telegraph — Copyright).
AUCKLAND, 1 Monday. Mi*. A. H. Benjamin, the New Zealand Meat Board's representative in the United States, who reached Auckland to-day by the s.s. Monterey, expressed the opinion that if America is to remain on the gold standard she must let down her tariff walls. The Hawley-Smoot tariff had been disastrous and already it was predicted that Senator Smoot would lose his" seat. There could he no imports of meat until the tariff was amended, anci even after amendment the sucess of New Zealand meat on the United States market would depend on its be}ing under the control of the Meat Board. Dumping such as had occurl red must not be permitted. Mr. Benjamin expressed the opinion that there would be no increase in wool values until European condition| were settled. In America only 15 per cent. of th.e factories were working, and they had 100,000,0001b of raw wool on hand, and the new clip was estimated to produce a further 375,000,0001b.
