THREE NATIVES CAUGHT WITH TUIS AND PIGEONS SUBSTANTIAL FINES IMPOSED Taking a serious view. of charges against three natives, involving the diooting of protected birds, Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., yesterday imposed fines which should have a deterrent affect upon poaching in the district. The men were M. K. Kelly, James Sampson and Jack Taitua. The Conservator of Fish and Game, Mr. A. Kean, told the court that a ranger had met them coming down the Maunganui Valley in a motor car and inquired if they had shot anything. Ihe men replied "No," but not sati.fefied, the official looked inside ' the veliicle and there found nine tuis and four pigeons. These were prohibited birds and the act provided for a penalty of £25. The guns belonging to the mefi had been confiscated. Poaching in the distfcrict was causing a great deal of trouble. Mr. R. A. Potter, who appeared for the men, explained that they were out of work and had no credit. They went out and shot the birds for sustenance, believing that they had a right to do so. The Magistrate said the charges must be regarded seriously, or the protected birds would become extinct. Penalties would have to be substantial and he would fine each of the "accused £15 and 15/- costs.
