STRANDED ON ROCKS DURING DENSE FOG OFF ALGIERS

LONDON, Saturday. The White Star liner, Ferndale stranded during a dense fog. All the forward holds are submerged and it is feared she will be a total loss. There are good prospects of falvaging all the after holds. All hands are safe. The majority will he despatched from Algiers, whenco a salvage company is expediting the discharge of the cargo. A message from Gibraltar on Friday stated that the Ferndale sent out an S.O.S. call. She indicated that her position was near Delly's Rock, 49 miles east of Algiers. A later message from Algiers stated that the oil tanker British Sovereign piclced up the S.O.S. and raced to the assistance of the Ferndale. The liner was found on the rocks. Everyone on board is safe. The Ferndale, formerly one of the Commonwcalth liners, was built at Sydney in 1924. She is a steel twinscrew steamer of 9947 gross tons.
