AUCKLAND, Sunday. By jumping through a plate glass lvindow at the front of a shop, a thief escaped from a conStable who interrupted him as he was attempting to blow open the safe in thie Auckland Meat Company's shop at fhe corner of Dominion Road and Grange Roadi, early this morning. The man entered the shop through a back window and -had inserted a plug of gelignite, complete .with fuse and detonator in the key hole of the safet which wras in the front shop within 10 feet of the window. As he was about to fire the charge, the constable on beat saw the thief moving in the darkened shop and went around to the r.ear. As the constable was ahout to enter he made a slight noise, and the thief immediately jumped through the window, gaining a considerable start. The constable pursued him along the darkened street, but lost slght of him. The safe contained a considerable sum of money.
