SHAKESPEARIAN RECITAL A very interesting and instructive recital of some of the best-known passages in Shakespeare's plays was given at the Rotorua High School yesterday afternoon to about eighty of the pupils by Mr. R. Purdie, who makes periodical tours of the secondary schools of Australia and New Zealand. Mr. Purdie paid a visit to the school last year, and on both occasions his excellent interpretations have been greatly appreciated by scholars and staff. Mr. Purdie, who prefaced his impersonations by descriptions of the characters, showed special ability in dialogue, which he portrayed with great realism. The passages selected included wellknown scenes and speeches from "Hamlet," "Macbeth," "Julius Ceasar," and "Henry VIII." NO DAMAGE DONE Notwithstanding the heavy rain storm which passed over this district on Thursday no material damage has been done to roads or bridges. Both the Rotorua County Council and the Public Works Department state that no serious repairs are necessary. COAL SUPPLIES Although Rotorua coal merchants are eompelled to ration supplies to their customers as a result of the coal miners' strike, there is, as yet, no serious shortage of supplies. Coal is coming forward in small quantities «from some of the Waikato mines, and it is anticipated that stocks will be sufficient to carry on for the next fortnight. The merchants take a hopeful view of an early settlement of the dispute.
