BASKETBALL
OPOTIKI AND WHAKATANE A AND B TEAMS: AT PLAY. A VICTORY APIECE. Last Saturday morning two basketball teams and one Rugby XV from Whakatane arrived at the Opotiki District High School. Each visitor was taken to lunch by a member of the Opotiki team. At 1.30 p.m. the B basketball teams played off their match. The play was fast; Opotiki started with the ball and in four passes had it down their end of the court, Miss M. Gouch, shooting a suecessful goal. Up fill half-time the game was very even„ but after the interval, Opotiki asserted a definite superiority. M. Couch in particular was outstanding. Whakatane' s* passing was swift and sure. The game ended in a win for Opotiki, the score being 11- — 7. The A teams then took the court, Whakatane looking very neat in their blaek and yellow uniforms, and Opotiki also in their navy and white tunies. Opotiki won the toss and took the ball, which went to the goalers and resulted in a score. However, Opotiki's luck was out, for they were not able to score another point before half-time, Whakatane attacking with swift passes" and 'aecurate shooting. After the interval, Opotiki centres played well, intercepting Whakatane passes. Whakatane goalers proved excellent, and the game ended with the score 10 — 7 in favour of the visitors. The teams were as follows:— Whakatane. — Goals: W. Righton, L. James, J. Roberts; centres: S. Parkinson: E. Sisam, J. Collins; defences. J. Baker, M. Barr, N. Haultain (capt). Opotiki. — Goals: E.
