AUCKLAND, Thursday. Walter Phillip Hailes, aged 30, farmer, was sentenced to six months' hard labour to-day for obtaining a first-class railway tickot from Auckland to Invercargill and £24 17/- in cash by means of a valueless cheque. Counsel for the accused said he was a sick man. Detective-Sergcant Kelly: So is the clerk who sold him the tickefc and gave him the cash. It was stated previously that the clerk had to make good the loss.
