jones monoplane MACHINE FOR PROJECTED N.Z. FLIGHT CRASHES BOTH OCCUPANTS KILLED
— By Telegra.ph — Copyrlglit).
Rec. June 16, 7.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Thursday. Built specially for the projected New Zealand flight, the Jones monoplane crashed at Quaker Hill near Parramatta and Roy Mitchell of Mosman and Arthur Barnes were killed. Mitchell had heen testing the raachine for some time and took Bariues as a passenger for the flight. An eyewitness saw the machine turn sideways and fall in a paddock. The engine was buried in the earth and the fusilage was a crumpled broken mass. The occupants must have been killed- instantly, and every bone in their bodies seemed broken. A party, including Mr. Don Harkness and the designer, Mr. L. B. Jones, dashed to the site of the tragedy. An iron rod completely pierced the body of one man. The men's features were nnreeognisable. The machine had behaved splendidly hitherto, although it was forced down on June 5 at Stuarttown during the flight to Bourke, when Mitchell and Jones, the occupants were missing for two days. 0 The engine was a Harkness-Hor-nett of 110 horse power.
