N. HOWE GAINS FASTEST TIME ON THIRD SUCCESSIYE OCCASION SATURDAY'S ROAD RACE The third cycle road race in the winter programme of the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held on Saturday afternoon over a course from the Mourea Post Office to the junction of Te Ngae road and Fenton Street. The conditions of the race provided for "sealed" handicaps, the riders being dispatched from the starting point at intervals of thirty seconds. Six riders faced the starter. R. Henry was the first to get away followed by N. Howe, J. McCall, H. Howe, C. Haycock and S. Howe. Going up the first hill N. Howe commenced to gain ground on Henry, and had passed him at the turn-off to Tikitere. With the exception of McCall and H. Howe, the other riders were holding their positions fairly well. Passing the abittoirs N. Howe had drawn away from the rest of the field and was riding a fine race. No change in the positions of the other riders took place until the last two miles of the race, when S. Howe commenced to overtake H. Howe, McCall and Haycock. N. Howe maintained his lead until the finishing point was reached and was followed aeross the line by Henry and Haycock. J. McCall was the next to finish and he, with his handicap of four minutes was deelared the winner of the race. For the third time in succession, N. Howe gained fastest time' for the distance which he covered in the good time of 29min 46sec. Second fastest time was secured by S. Howe, who covered the distance in 32min 30sec. Both these riders are to be congratulated upon their fine performances, the ages of both being under 17 years. Following are the detailed results: J. McCall (4min) 29min 45sec,l; N.
