MILLERTON TRAGEDY

MILLERTON, Sunday. Two uudergrouud managers o£ tbe Westport Coal Coiapany's Millerton mine, William Lowden, married, aged 45 years, with a wife and family of three, and Joseph Edwardl Pffeffer, married witb a v/ife and six of a family, were gassed in tbe mine to-day. The men went into tbe mine to put a plug in tbe water pipe beyond tbe stopping in the far area, iSrst tying a ligbt on tbe side of tbe rope for safety reasobs. Lowden v/ent in first and v/as gassed, and Pffeffer, wbo went to bis rescue, suffered a similar fate Later gas masks were obtained and the bodies of both men were recovered.
