MR. DE VALERA RETURNS

— By Telegraph- — Copyright).

Rec. June 12, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Saturday. Mr. de Valera, upon boarding the mail boat at Livei'pool, refused to make a statsment beyond that he had enjoyed himself, adding: "One always does enjoy little trips like these." The Daily Telegraph political eontributor says that the Irish spokesman had the lions' share of the discussions. He had prepared an elaborate brief, the reading of which occupied most of the morning's session. Tha statement contained no hint of compromise nor of concessions. The position as regards the Imperial Economic Conference at Ottawa remains the same. The British Government has no alternative but to refuso to enter into further agreement with the Irish Free State, Thus there could be no agreement regarding preference and Southern Ireland is consequently placed at a serious disadvantage at Ottawa compar.ed with other Bominions. The disagreement extended to all points on tbe oath, annuities, and tbe partition of Ireland questions. The Morning Post political eorres-

pondent describes the Downing Street conference as one of the greatest hoaxes to which the British Government has been suhjected in recent years. It is understood that the utmost length to which the British Government was prepared to go was the submission of any legal documents on which there were differences of interpretation, to independent arbitration. The Times says there could be no change in tbe attitude of the British Government while Mr. de Valera maintains his present standpoint.
