CHOOSING A CAR
NUMEROUS CONSIDERATIONS IN SELECTING A MODEL. One of the most perplexing tasks which confronts the prospective buyer is to make a wise choice in the selection of a model suited to his purse and needs. Some motorists, states an overseas paper, set ahout this under the misconception that the real value of a vehicle to themselves should he gauged by its market price as compared with its apparent intrinsic worth without making due allowance for such factors as running costs, registration fees, and the particular purpose for which it is required. The prudent course is to decide first of all upon a price limit and then upon the annual sum which one is prepared both to disburse and write off in respect of the model purchased. Those who, so to speak, motor on their incomes, will do well to adopt an elementary costing system whereby they can estimate how much a month on the basis of reasonable mileage, should be allowed for running expenses and repairs, and how much should be written off annually or, in other words, set aside toward the purchase of a new car when the old one shall have outlived its usefulness, which may, according to the inclination and financial circumstances of the individual, be put down at anything between four and eight years. It is obvious that that the older the car the more it will usually he necessary to expend each year in keeping it in good condition. | Not until all these considerations have been weighed and analysed should the intending buyer set his heart upon this or that model because of its appearance, performance, or favourable reputation.
