BIG GULF REMAINS

(Press Assn.-

COMPROMISE DIFFICULT

— By Telegra.ph — Copyrtght).

LONDON, Thursday. The Sun learns that nothing more !;angible than contact with the friendliest relations has thus far resulted from the Thomas-De Yalera conversations. There is no foundation either for the reported deadlock or high hopes. The delegates put their cases frankly and lengthily, hut the conversations were only preliminary and neither side attempted to commit itself. A big gulf clearly remains to be bridged and compromise will be very difficult. At to-day's Cabinet meeting Mr. Thomas and Lord Hailsham reported that their discussions with Mr. de Valera and tbe Irish Free State Ministers yesterday were of a preliminary character and the conversations will be continued on Friday, when Mr. de Valera will visit London for the purpose. It is understood the Prime Minister will participate in Friday's discussions.
