NEW SCHOOL AGE
The full effect on the staffing of schools of the raising of the schooi admission age from five to six years will liot he felt until next year, although no children under the age of six years have been enrolled since the beginning of this month. ' Schools are graded in the month of February, according to the average attendances during the preceding August. When this re-grading takes place the Education Board is required to reduce the number of teachers at schools that are overstaffed. Since the Finance Act was passed on May 10, a number of children under the age of six years have been admitted to schools in Canterbury (says a Christchurch exchange), but they Cannot be placed on the roljs until they attain the qualif ying age. The age at whichi it is compulsory for a child to begin its schooi life is seven years.
