(From
WHAKATANE, Thursday. Messrs L. Wylie (secretary), E. Armstrong, F. Stuchbery, Rev. Weymouth, G. Cawte and A. Piggales on behalf of the returned men, r-equest-ed the. Minister to lend his support to further the plaeing of the association's recent application for an art union to a higher place on the waiting list. Mr. Wylie stated that the object of the Art Union was to provide the necessary finance to -returned soldiers and natives to pay off their finaiicial obligations and so relieve their mind from their present mental strain, and give them a good start again. This would be done by making short dated loans at low rate of interest. Referring to the natives Mr. Wylie stated that the conditions under which the Maoris of Te Teko . were living was an absolute disgrace; the natives were in small dugouts there, worse than they were at the waf. Representation had been made to the Minister of Native Affairs, but nothing had been done. The Minister replying stated that there were numerous applications in for Art Unions, and if even the deserving applications were granted it would take about 12 years to complete them. The matter was really one for the Minister of Internal Affairs. and he knew that the Minister had amalgamated several applications in one with each body taking a proportion of the proceeds. He woiild bring the matter before the Minister of Internal Affairs.
