DOSS HOUSE SHELTER

(To the Editor) Sir, — In reference to the paragraph published in the Rotorua "Morning Post," ro the Doss House, perhaps it will interest you to learn that at nc time during the past month has the nightly tally exceeded 28 men. Of these, 17 are registered relief workers 12 of them have seen act'ive service — and these 17 are contributing 10/- per week from their relief payThe balance have been given admittance on tickets signed by the police or the town clerk, and do not contribute. Thus the cost of their upkeep has fallen on their fellow residents there, and not on the public of the town. It is no offence against good citizenship occassionally to succour those who pass through seeking work, especially as the County Council has permitted the use of the isolation

i ward gratis, for this express purpose. — I am, etc. J. ANDERSON, On behalf • of the Men. Rotorua, June 7, 1932. Editor's Note. — There was no suggestion in the paragraph published j by the "Post," that the men oecupy- | ing the Doss House were not bona . fide cases and entitled to relief of i this nature. We did not suggest in any way that there was "any offence ' against good citizenship in succouring those who pass through in search of work." Neither was it suggested that the men occupying the shelter | were in any way imposing upon the , eitizens of Rotorua. The actual posii tion is that the shelter is practically self-supporting as a result of the pay- ; ments by the men permanently resident, but there has, to an increasing extent, been a call upon charitable aid funds derived from the Waikato Hospital Board, in order to supply the d-'fference — between the amount contributed by the men, and the actual expenses. — Editor "Morning Post."
