MASTERTON, Monday. The County Council deeided today that it eould not carry on with the relief works under tbe conditions now imposed by tbe Main Highways Board. The council had not sufficient funds for transport and other costs owing to reduced income, and unless some relief could be provided, the only alternative was to close down after June 30. s. The council is finding work for one-third of the unemployed in the whole of the Wairarapa. The total number in Masterton, provided with work is 70 per cent. The cost to the council at the present rate of expediture is £4000 per annum. The council, however, plit forward a suggestion for the establishment of relief eamps for about 80 men and offered £500 toward the cost.
