("Post" Special Commissioner)

ELECTRIC WORKS LINKING OF WAIKAREMOANA, MANGAHAO AND ARAPUNI IN CIRCLE . INSUFFICIENT FINANCE

WELLINGTON, Monday. There is little prospect of an early prosecution of the work connected With the important -electric supply link joining the Waikaremoana plant with Arapuni on the eastern route through the Rotorua area, according to official advice given the £Post's" representative to-day. Owing to lack of finance, the Public Works pepartment "has had to slow down the* work considerably on its previous extensive project of linking " Arapuni, Waikaremoana and Mangahao in a great circle."- , A eontract has just been-let by~the departmenf jfor steel for towers on the. western route joining Mangahao,, and Arapuni, through Taranaki, and this will be pushed ahead slowly this .year. A preliminary survey has been made on tha.-Rotorua side, but the f utur-e .of the proposition depends -on finance. It is not expected in official quarters that the eastern link will be made for two or three years, in view of the lack of funds. Incidentally, the department announced today that several hundred men are to bo put off the Waitaki work, which will be slowed down considerably.
