AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL
SUCCESSFUL MEETING LARGE CROWD WATCHES FIRST DAY EYENTS PROTEST LODGED IN FINAL The weather was very kind to the Rotorua Athletic and Axemen's Club for the first day of its annual chopping and athletic carnival held on the Government grounds playing area yesterday, and the club was rewarded for an excellent programme by an even oetter crowd than attended the meeting last year. Tho chopping events were the outstanding attraction and with wellknovvn axemen from all parts of New Zealand competing, some very good performanees were recorded. The Ohinemutu handicap 12in. standing chop was decided yesterday, and the heats in the big event the 14in. chop. To-day, the final of this event will be decided and the extra 12in standing chop. An excellent musical programme supplied by the Rotorua Boys Band, which was making its first pubiic appearance, in addition to side-shows, and a sports and novelty programme for the youngsters, gave the day quite a carnival atmosphere. The hockey tournament on the adjacent grounds also supplied a further attraction, and very adequately filled any spare moments there were in the programme. J. Shewry, of Taumaranui re*crded a good performance in winning the Ohinemutu handicap in 22 2-5 seeonds, but he has yet to survive a prctest lodged by P. Tane, of Otorohanga. A meeting of the committee will he held this morning to consider the decision of the judges, Messrs E. A. Meredith (Rotorua), A. McPherson (Rotoiti), and G. Parkes (Te Whaiti). With three chopping heats and two finals to be decided to-day, in -addition to cycling and athletic events, the committee has decided to commence the programme at 11 a.m. instead of at 1 p.m. as originally scheduled. Yesterday 's results were: — CHOPPING EVENTS Ohinemutu Handicap Chop, of £27. 12in. Standing Block First Heat: A. Ward (Te Akau), lOsec, 1; J. Cooney (Ngaruawahia), 8sec, 2; J. Richardson (Te Akau), 7sec, 3. Time, 26sec. Second Heat: J. Uden (Taumarunui), 15see, 1; H. Herkt (Turua), 12sec, 2; J. Cameron (Te Whetu), 12sec, and G". Worker (Wellsford), dead-heat for third. Anderson was placed third, but on a protest, Worker secured a dead-heat. Time, 29sec. Third Heat: H. Scalletti (Taumarunui), 12sec, 1; L. Bolstad (Raetihi), llsec, 2; J. Shewry (Taumarunui), 8sec, 3. Time, 30see. Fourth Heat: W. J. Costello (Rotorua), 5sec, 1; T. Robinson (Rotorua), 15sec, 2; Tane (Otorohanga), 9sec, and F. Anderson (Matawai), dead-heat, third. Tane was placed third, but on a protest, Anderson secured a dead-heat. Time, 24 l-5sec. Final. — Shewry, 1; Uden, 2; Anderson, 3. Tane protested against the placings, and his protest will be decided to-day. Time, 22 2-5sec. There was fast chopping in the final, but considerable dispute as to the first placing. Anderson (Matawai), 16sec, and J. Cooney, 13sec, dead-heat for first; A. Ward (Te Akau), 16sec, 2; P. Tane (Otorohanga), 14sec, 3. Time, 39 2-5sec. Fourth Heat: F. Thompson (Ruahine), 20sec, 1; T. Uden (Taumarunui), 24sec, 2; T. Noble (Waiuku), 16sec, 3. Time, 42 3-5sec. The final of this event will be decided to-day. Cycling Events Half-mile Handicap. — M. Bell (scr), 1; S. Howe (scr), 2; R. Dawson (20yds), 3. Time, lmin 21 2-5s. Seven starters. Bell and Howe both rode well-judged races to pass the handicap men and fight out the finish. Bell won comfortably. Two Mile Handicap. — S. Howe (100yds), 1; M. Bell (scr), 2; R. Dawson (50yds), 3. Time, 6min 17sec. Eight started, but only the three placed men finished. Howe and Bell fought out the final lap, but Howe spurted at the last to win by three lengths. Dawson was further back. One Mile Handicap. — R. Dawson (35yds), 1; S. Howe (60yds), 2; M. Bell (scr), 3. Time, 3min 1 l-5sec. Seven started.
