THIEF LEAVES SHOES IN COWYARD MUD IN HIS HASTE TRACKS LEAD TO 14 DAYS
(By Telegraph—
OPOTIKI, Thursday. Gilbert Chaulklen (18), appeared before justices in the Opotiki Police Court this morning charged with stealing 701bs. of cream the property of Mr. William Reginald Walker, of Tirohonga. Accused was convicted and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. It appears that numerous thefts of this nature have been expejienced in the Tirohonga locality for some time. On this occasion, however, an unauthorised visitor to Mr. Walker 's place stumbled while crossing the cowyard and spilt a can of cream. In his haste to get a,way the intruder left his shoes embedded in the mud. He also left tracks leading in the direction of accused's home. Quick work on the part of the local oolice led to the arrest of Chaulklen at Te Awamutu (not at Taumarunui as at first reported). Several witnesses identified the pair of shoes left in the cowyard mud as being the property of accused. In entering a conviction, the presiding justiee said he trusted that as this was accused's first offence, the sentence of 14 days' imprisonment would be a sharp lesson to him.
