MAORI MOTORIST FiNED FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING PLNALTY FOR ASSAULT

WHAKATANE, Tuesday. In the Whakatane Magistrate's Lourt to-day before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., Tamati Ivaiwhata, of Paroa, farmer, was charged with cutting a corner and driving a ear in a manner dangerous to the public. A. Donaldson, borough inspector, stated in evidence that he followed defendant along Commerce Street, Whakatane, into Domain Road and although he was travelling at 40 miles an hour was only able to identify the number plate of the car at the intersection of King Street and Domain Road. Ivaiwhata (Mr. W. E. Ward) pleaded guilty to cutting the corner at Domain Road and not guilty to driving dangerously. In evidence he stated that he and his companion, T. Kereti, were driving at about 30 miles an hour. He knew that the inspector was following him. Cross-examined by the inspector, Kaiwhata denied that there was any traffie about at the time. There certainly were not seven cars. "You're a liar," he said, when Mr. Donaldson alleged that he was travelling at over 40 miles an hour. Kaiwhata's evidence was corroborated by Kereti. The Magistrate eonsidered that the inspector's evidence was the more trustworthy and convinced Kaiwhata on both charges, fining him £1 and 15s costs, for cutting the corner and £2 and 15s costs for dangerous driving." No Tail Light Vernon Percy, of Whakatane, was convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs for riding- a motor cycle with no taillight on the Whakatane-Awakeri Road on March 31. Noxious Weeds On the information of the noxious weed . inspector, Mr. H. J. Mai'ks, Raerino Patupo, of Te Teko, was condcted and fined £1 and costs. 15s 6d "or failing to clean his property of ?orse and blackberry, and £1 and costs 15s 6d for failing to clean ragwort. Assaulted His Wife John Henry Moody, of Awakeri, "armer, appeared for sentence on a •harge of assaulting his wife. Defen- \ iant was fined £10 with costs 25s in ; 'efault one month's imprisonment.
