LONDON, Monday. The death is announced of the Hon. William Pember Reeves, formerly of New Zealand, aged 74 years.
William Pember Reeves, was born in Canterbury New Zealand, in 1857, the eldest son of the late Hon. W. Reeves, at one time a member of the Legislative Council. He was educated at Christ's College Grammar School, Christchurch. He was called to the Bar, but preferred journalism, and edited the Canterbury Times and Lyttelton Times. Entering the New Zealand Parliament in 1887, as member for St. Albans, Mr. Reeves became Minister of Education, Justide artfl Labour at various times. It was when he was Minister of Labour that the Industrial Arbitration and Conciliation Acts were placed on the Statute Book. He was Agent . General in London from 1885 to 1905 and High Commissioner from 1905 to 1908. He was dir4ector of the London School of Economics, 1908-1920, chairman of the
National Banlc of New Zealand since 1917, and a member of the Senate of the University of London, 1902-1919. He was a Ph.D. of the University of Athens and Commander of the Order of the Saviour (Greece). Mr. Reeves represented New Zealand at various conferences in Europe, America and Australia and was the au,thor of several- hooks.
