CRAWFORD DEFEATS MORALES CUBAN STAR, BY FiNE PLAY HOPMAN ALSO SUGCESSFUL

Kec. May 10, 5.(J p.m. HAVANA, Saturday. Crawford (Australia) defeated ,Morales (Cuha), 6-3-, 6-1, 7-5, in the Davis Cup contest to-day. The day's play opeiied in clear, hot weather, with a large gallery. Morales won only four games in the fir'st two sets, and tbese were gained only throUgh Crawford's oecasional inaccuracies for the Australian outplayed Morales throughout with his plaee shots, which extended the Cuhan star. He was placing his drives to Morale's weak backhand. Crawford was slow in r'eaching fOrln at the start of the match, serving many double faults. Morales' opposition stiff'ened in the third set. He won the first three games, winning the third with service aces. Crawford seemed to be tiring owing to the heat, but he recovered, making repeated placements with such precision as to indicate his mastery of the situatioh, which was never really in doubt. Crawford won the next three games, and after the Cuban rau up a 5-4 lead the Australiah finished with a burst of speed to run out, so taking the first three games, as his opponent Wealcened badly. The point score for the match showed Crawford 108 points, of which 24 werh placements, to Morales' 24 points (12 placements). Hopman v. Vollmer Hopman (Australia) defeated Vollmer (Cuba), 6 — 2, 6 — 1, 4 — 6, 6 — 1. Although Hopman's consistently efficient court covering and accurate* timing and placing of his shots won the first two sets, Vollmer was off his usual form. The Cuban's recovery in the third set was brilliant. He, however, had little chance against Hopman's slashing attack. The Australian finished the match in short order. Vollmer was then playing indifferent tennis. Hopman's strong back-hand and speedy court coverage, were, moreover, hard to overcome, Vollmer made eight double faults in the match. The points score was: — Hopman 92, of which 16 were placements; Vollmer, 83, including 17 placements.
