EFFORT FOR PEACE

deputation to premier urges granting of relief WELLINGTON CITIZENS' MOVE WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Wellington Citizens' Unemployment Committee waited on the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, and the Minister of Employment, the Rt. tlon. J. G. Coates, today. Mr Young urged that a pronouncement should be made authorising further relief to those in distress. The deputation was heard in private, but the chairman of the committee, Mr. Goldsmith, subsequently stated that attention had been drawn •to the fact that the position with regard to the new scales of relief under the No. 5 Scheme was growing worse in the city, and that it had been represented that urgent steps should be taken to bring about peace and get the men back to work. "We do not for a moment wish to play into the hands of the rebellious elements of the community,'' said Mr

Goldsmith, "but we are firmly of opinion that a pronouncement now is a timely ofte and would be an indieation of the Government's strength. "We think a normal conditioh could again be brought about by the Government authorising the Hospital Board to darry on and provide a measure of relief, in addition to the cash payments under the new scheme, until the new machinery of the revised scheme is perfected. "If a statement to this effeet is fUtnished to the newSpapers and authority is given to this committee to eotivey the infotmation to the men concerned we feel satisfied that the men would return to their work tomortow, and that it would remove the agitation and menacing state of affairs Whieh exist to-day in our city." The Ministerial reply was to the effeet that the representations would be carefully considered and a reply furnished to the committee.
