Early Punishments.
At a meeting of the Taranaki Justices' Association some stories of vriy days and the punishment of offeruiers were related. Mr. W. H. Skinner referred to the fact that at one time New Plymouth boasted the possession of stocks, which were situated in what is now St. Aubyn Street, near the railway yards. On one occasion some offending sailors were placed in the stocks, but with a "Heave ho, and up she rises" 'they lifted the whole apparatus from its fixings and made away. One member asked if the stocks had been secured for the museum, but Mr. Skinner said that was the last New Plymouth saw of its stocks, and was the end -to that form rvf YvnniefhmmTt.
