GIRL GUIDES

SEVENTH BIRTHDAY PARTY HELD LAST WEEK. YEAR'S WORK (ILLUSTRATED. A large number of Girl Guides and their friends assembled at St. Luke's Hall last Thursday evening to eelebrate the seventh anniversary of the foundation of the Girl Guide movement in Rotorua. The programme was capably handled by the company eommander, Miss J. Worrall, and the various items illustrating guide life in general gave those present a much better understanding of the splendid, praetical lessons in citizenship taught to members of this world-wide movement. The party commenced with a demonstration of signalling by some of the guides, followed by a coon song sweetly sung by Betty Tyson. Two short sketches by the four patrols were indicative of what a guide considered loyalty should stand for. The first sketch was enacted by the Kingfisher and Kotare patrols, the main theme throughout being that a guide's sense of duty should outweigh her love of pleasure. The leading parts were taken by V. Musgrave, B. Urquhart, B. Clark and S. Jones. The second ksetch, by the White Rose and Kewpie patrols, brought to the fore the age-old saying "Honesty is the best" policy," and judging from the dialogue, a very sacred "policy" of the guides' law. June Roach, Cassy Faram, J. Ford and N. Pettit were the chief characters in the sketch. A lively tap dance by Graee Cosrnett followed the two short morality plays, and a Maori stick game executed to a vocal accompaniment was skilfully carried out by the Rangers. A duet by Y. and J. Ford was greatly appreciated, their voices blending in sweet harmony. The enrolment of new members of the Ranger campany was the next feature of the party, and in presenting the badges to the members, Miss Harris explained that this company was the first of its lcind to be founded in Rotorua, and consisted of girls over the age of 16 years who still wished to keep in touch with the guides and all that the movement stands for. Miss Harris then presented various badges won by guides during the year as follows: — Promotion to Patrol Leaders. — Joan Ford, Moana McKenzie, ,and Pearl James. Promotion to Second in Command, — Grace Prastlewaight and Margaret Ross. Pioneer Badge. — Jessie "VVallace, Clivena Young. Athlete's Badge. — Joyce Mason. Needlewoman's Badge. — Yvonne Ford. Service Stars. — Stella Osborne, Joyce Mason, Paddy Windlyer, Alison McKenzie, Amy Osborne, Molly Bar■nacott and Gladys Burton. Morse Hat Band.- — Marie Garth. Supper followed, a special feature being the Guide Birthday Gake set in the middle of the room and proudly bearing seven lighted candles. At the completion of supper, the guides formed a horeshoe on the floor and entertained those present with a number of delightful campfire songs, only wanting a real campfire to make the picture complete. The party was brought "to a close with the singing of the Guide Song and the National Anthem,
