DRIVER FINED AS RESULT OF ACCIDENT NEAR MODEL PA. BOUGHT CAR FOR £8 17s 6d. A case arising out of a collision which* oecurred opposite the mod?l pa, on the Taupo Road, came before the Rotorua Magistrate's Court- yesterday, when Alfred Patrick^ Warbrick defended a charge of driving an improperly lighted vehicle. Mr. M. H. Hampson appeared for defendant. Senior-Sergt. Carroll stated that the collision occurred as a result of defendant's driving a car which was carrying only one light. Francis William Geoghan sa;d that he had been driving past the pa on the night in question when he had noticed a single light approaching. The light had looked like that of a motor-cycle or a hurricane lamp. H had made sure that he was on his correet side, and had had the "surprise of his life" when the other vehicle had crashed into him. Th' light on the right hand side of Warbriclc's car was not showing. After the accident, witness asked defendant why his lights were not in order and Warbrick had then accused him of being on the wrong side of the road. Constable Kelly said that, after making a statement, Warbrick had admitted to him that he had just pre/iously bought the car for £5. It was an old, dilapidated machine. Mr. Hampson called the defendantvho said that after purchasing the -ar, a mechanic had gone over it v' him and had tested the engine. They had stopped at a bowser station to , fill the radiator and he had then noticed that both lights were burning. • In reply to the magistrate, the defendant said he had paid £3 17s 6d } for the car. * A garage mechnic stated that after defendant bought the car, he examinM the engine and noticed that the lights were in good order.
