MAN DESCRIBED AS DANGEROUS OFFERS RESISTANCE TO CONSTABLES COMPANION ALSO RESISTS

PALMERSTON N., Monday. The story of a chase with a rifle after two men wanted by the police over the countryside at Ashhurst on the morning of April 26, was related in the Magistrate's Court when Walter Corlett (29) and Victor James Jameson (37) denied charges of being idle and disorderly, consorting with thieves, theft and resisting arrest. Each was sentenced to two months imprisonment on the last-named charge. Evidence disclosed that Constables Fischer and Miller went to Ashhurst •to execute a warrant for the arrest of the two accused. When the warrants, were read, both at .first refused tp come, but after argument agreed to do so, asking permission to go inside for their hats and coats. As they did not come out house to find both men gone. On going outside they saw them both running up a hill 400 yards away. Constable Takes Rifle Constable Miller secured a rifle from his car, whereupon the accused separated. Constable Fischer headed Corlett off, the latter coming to grips with the constable, but on Constable Miller coming to the assistance of his comrade Corlett agreed to go quietIy. Constable Miller, with the rifle, then went after Jameson, who seeing tnat Corlett had been arrested, surrendered. „ In Constable Miller's car, Jameson produced a sheath knife, which Constable Miller was of the opinion he did not have when first interviewed. In evidence, Constable Miller said that Jameson had boasted previously that he would shoot with a sawn-off shot-gun that he carried in his car, any policeman who entered the motor. Witness added that Jameson was a dangerous man and that he was taking no risks. The Magistrate considered that events might have been more serious had Constable Miller not been armed.
