UNEMPLOYMENT TAX
CHARGE ON INCOMES AND LEYY BOTH NOW DUE. PROVISIONS OF NEW ACT. A further reminder is given of the duty imposed by the Unemployment Amendment Act, 1932, in connection with the emergency charge on ineome other than salary or wages. Under the Unemployment Amendment Act, 1931, this charge was payable on one-third of the income for the year ended March 31, 1932; but in the Unemployment Amendment Act, 1932,' two important changes are made: the amount of the charge is increased, and it is payable on the whole of the income other than salary or wages, derived during the year ended March 31, 1932. The due dates of payment of the charge on income are the first days of May, August, November and February, upon which dates the unemployment levy also falls due. The charge on income and the levy may be paid in quarterly instalments, or two or more instalments of the charge may be paid if desired. If payment is made of only one instalment of the charge, the rate will be one penny for each ls 8d of onefourth of the income for the year ended March 31, 1932. Further important clauses in the Unemployment Amendment Act, 1932, provide for the payment of the emergency tax on other income by all women whose income other than salary or wages is in excess of £20 per annum, and for the exemption of persons under 16 years of age from liability for the tax on wages. It is desired that when payment of the levy is being made there shall also be completed a declaration regarding income other tha nsalary or wages. It is optional whether the amount of the income is declared to the Commissioner of Taxes or to the Post Office, but under the unemployment legislation it is necessary that one such declaration be made. If no income except salary or wages has been received, a form to declare that fact is provided at all money-or-der offices. The making of a declaration of in-' come under the Unemployment Amendment Act is separate and distinct from the making of a return of income for land and income tax purposes. The fullest information and all necessary forms may be obtained at all money-order offices.
