THREE TRAMWAY MEN FACE CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH RIOT

CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The 16 men arrested as a result of the riot this morning at the tram barn were brought before Mr. Mosley, S.M., at a special sittingjit the Magistrate's Court this afternoon. The accused included three tramway men. Each of the accused was charged that he did, with a view to compelling other persons, and -to arrest the free work which such other persons had a legal right to do, wrongfully and without legal authority watch or beset such other persons at a place where they were working. All pleaded not guilty. Senior- Sergeant Fox, in asking for a remand, said there were other charges to investigate against sonle of the accused, among whom were several well known Communists. The arrested men had large and small stoneS and batons in their possession. One man had a sock filled with _ an iron bar. In view of the serious situation he asked that hail, if allowed, he substantihl. The Magistrate allowed bail, accused in the sum of £250 and two sureties each of £250.
