TAXI DRIVER'S STORY OF DRIVE DURING RIOTS SAFEST MAN IN AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, Monday One of the principal witnesses at the Police Court, this morning, when the hearing of charges of rioting was restimed, was a taxi driver, Cyril Whittle. Whittle said that on the night of April 14 he was called to Park Road near Auckland Hospital, and there a nian With his head bandaged asked to be driven to the Town Hall. Witness said: "Do you expect me to take you down there like you are." The man replied: "I am Jim Edwards, and while I am in your car you are the safest man in Auckland." Witness drove the man down about 8.40 p.m. On Teaching the fringe of the crowd Edwards asked a man how things were going. Witness then drove Edwards home, and later Edwards returned to the Town Hall with a woman who witness presumed was Mrs. Edwards. Edwards at this time had a megaphone, The woman advised Edwards not to leave the car when it returned to the Town Hall. Edwards replied: "i am not going to the cooler to-night. 1*11 get a half a do£6n mbn t6 picket my house.
