NINE MEMBERS DUE TO RETIRE NEXT MONTH QUESTION OF APPOINTMENTS
WELLINGTON, Wednesday. If nine members of the Legislative Council, who are due to retire on May 7 next are not reappointed, the strength of the Council will be reduced to 25 members. -The present strength is 34. Those whose term of office will expire on Saturday week are the Hon. Sir John Sinclair (Otago), the Hon. E. W. Alison (Auckland), the Hon. D. T. Fleming (Southland), the Hon. G. J. Garland (Auckland), the Hon. J. B. Gow (Auckland) , the Hon. A. F. Hawke (Southland), the Hon. W. Stewart (Auckland), the Hon. G. M. Thomson (Otago), and the Hon. W. H. Triggs (Canterbury), all of whom were either appointed or reappointed on. May 7, 1925. In addition to the nine Councillors mentioned, three other Councillors, the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes (Canterbury), the Hon. L. M. Isitt (Canterbury), and the Hon. G. Witty (Canterbury), are due to retire on October 28 next. Shortly after assuming the Prime Ministership, the Rt, Hon. G. W. Forbes stated that it was not intended to reappoint any Legislative Councillors in the meantime and when the matter was mentioned to him a few weeks ago his reply was: "We will take our jumps when we come to them." In recommending that the number of members of the House of Representatives should be reduced, the National Expenditure Commission also suggested that there should be a reduction in the number of Legislative Councillors, but no number was specified.
