prime minister's opinion of new railway construction REPLY TO DEPUTATION
— By Telegr8-ph — Copyrlght).
WELLINGTON, Tuesday. "Putting money into railway construction is a thing of the past," remarked the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Eorbes, in reply to a deputation from the Buller district today, when a request was made that the Westport-Inangahua line, upon which work has been stopped, should^ be completed, and that the labour should be paid out of unemployment funds. Mr. Forbes went on to.say that people would not lend money for that purpose now, as railways all over the world were in difficulties. He made some observations upon the treatment various other lines had received after their completion, and he complained that although the greatest promise had often been held out for the profit the line would show, the people of the district had too often decided to use other means of transport after large sums had been spent in providing a railway.
