Those in attendance included Brigadier-Gen-eral J. H. Cannan, a New Zealander, and Lieutenant-Colonel Fitzherbert. . Field Marshal Sir W. Birdwood, responding to the toast of "Those who served at Gallipoli,"' said the world provided no better examples of real democracies than Australia and New Zealand. They would never fight unless they believed their cause righfeous; yet their men gave their lives willingly at Anzac, knowing they fought in a righteous cause. He did not desire to overlook the amazing bravery of the Twenty-ninth Division, but the Anzacs fought with almost reckless bravery.
