GRIM RELIC
CHAIN H.ARNESS IN WHICH CONDEMNED PIRATES HUNG. LONDON. Recalling the days when pirates and other criminals were hanged at Execution Dock, a grim relic has just been recovered from the Thames. In the course of operations off the site of the Execution Dock, not far below Tower Bridge, a chain harness was brought to the surface by a dredger. The harness consists of a chain, which was placed round the body of the criminal, and kept in position by a padlock, the wrists being secured by iron hoops eonnected to the body belt. In this harness the bodies of criminals were left dangling until three tides had flowed over them. ' It is believed that the renowned Capt. Kidd was the last to meet his end in this way at Execution Dock on May 23, 1701. Experts of tha British Museum are satisfied that the relie is 18th century work, and that it undoubtedly had been in use at Execution Dock. Each link in the chain is about 3in in length.
