GOVERNMENT REFUSES TO AMEND OR WITHDRAW PROPOSALS ESSENTIAL TO SOLVENCY
WELLINGTON, Tuesday. , In the House of Representatives to-day the Leader of the Opposition, j Mr. H. E. Holland, asked the Prime j Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, ( whether, on account of the unsettled ; state of the Dominion, he would withdraw and Bill which proposed to remove the right of either side to an industral dispute to refer the matter to the Arhitration Court for settlement. Mr. Holland also asked whether, in view of the feeling of unrest and resentment existing among the greater part of the people of the Dominion, Mr Forbes would withdraw those clauses of the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill which proposed to reduce pensions and those ' clauses which proposed to further reduce the wages and salaries of public servants. Mr. Forbes replied that the proposals in the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill fpr the reduetion of expenditure were absolutely necessary to preserve the financial solvency of the Dominion. If they were not passed, a greater disaster would be entailed and the Government had no intention of withdrawing them. The Industrial Coniliation and Arhitration Act he continued, had already passed the House by a substantial majority and the Government had no intention of interfering with it.
