(Press Assn.-
NOT EVEN TRAM FARES
-By Telegraph — Copyrlght.)
AUCKLAND, Tuesday. "Not one of the special constables is being paid," said the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, this morning. On Thursday evening the Mayor made an appeal to law-abiding citizens to report at the Central Police Station to be sworn in, in order to protect life and property. The Mayor said that the control of the special constables had now been handed over to another authority, and on inquiry being made there it was stated that the men received no payment whatever, not even their tram fares. It was stated that they were a loyal body of men who had answered the call, and paid their own expenses.
