ATTITUDE REGARDING WAR DEBTS STUPID AND ILLOGICAL AWAENING FROM ILLUSION
By Telegraph — Copyrlght).
ADELAIDE, Tuesday. Professor E. H. Oliphant, who has returned from a lecturing tour of the United States, describes that country's attitude concerning war dehts as stupid and illogical. ! The United States, he said, cornered the gold supply, thus -making goods the only form of international payment possible, and then in effect said, "You must pay us every cent. but by our high tariff we cripple you so that you cannot." j The Americans apparently thought they could have it both ways, an illusion from which they are now awak- i ening. | Professor Oliphant declared that although there is strong opposition to the revision and cancellation of debts, j the United States Government would eventually be forced to adopt it through sheer pressure of economic circumstances. j
