INSANITY IN IRELAND
STARTLJNG FIGURES FROM FREE STATE. ONE IN 200 OF POPULATION. DUBLIN, March 24. In the Irish Free State one in every 200 persbns is an inmate of a mental hospital. This statement was made in a report x'ead at a meeting of the Dublin Mental Hospital Committee. Inter-marriage between relations, vioe, drink and drugs are among the major causes of insanity, it was stated. The report referred to the alarming increase since 1929 in the number of inmates of mental institutions and the prevalence of insanty in the Free State generally. If to the number of patients were added the number of doctors, nurses, and other attendants, and if private institutions also were taken into account, it meant that practically one person in every 1Q0 of the population was non-productive. The report provoked a long discussion, during which it was suggested that the newly-eleqted Government should appoint a commission of inquiry into the causes of this increase in insanity and their preven-; tion.
