Borough Road Repairs Taking advantage of the finer weather conditions yes.terday work was commenced on road repairs throughout the Rotorua Borough. The recent rain had cut the roads about badly and according to the. Borough Engineer Mr. F. C. Bunyard, some of them were in a worse condition than at any time during the last -f our years. Slack Angling Period There has been very little angling done in the Rotorua and Taupo districts during the past week, owing probably to the unpleasant weather conditions prevailing generally. The Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr A. Kean) who returned on Wednesday from a visit to Taupo and Tongariro states that there are very few anglers operating either at Tokaanu or Taupo. Some phenomenal rises of fish have been reported in Rotoiti adjacient to the Ohau Channel outlet, but the fish were very difficult and anglers had little success. St. Luke's Girl's Club. The annual general meeting of tbe St. Luke's Girls' Club was held -on Monday evening. Archdeacon Chatterton presided over a very good attendance and welcomed all old and new members. The Archdeacon referred to the successful and happy year enjoyed by the club, and expressed gratification at the fact that the sum of £46 had been raised for chureh work and local charities, through the efforts of the members. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: President, Miss M. Mactier; secretary, Miss Ethel Sharpe; treasurer, Miss Cissy Kelly; committee, Misses Gwen Dillon, Gwen Pakes, Nell Allen Marriane Lasenby and Molly Owens.

Medal Foursome. Members of the Rotorua Ladies' Golf Club will play their first matcfi of the season, a medal foursome, on Wednesday, April 13. Play will comrnence at noon and players are ""o choose their own partners, and opponents and enter the names on the tinie sheet posted at the club house. Golf Season Operiing The members of the Rotorua Golf Club will open their season this afternoon with a mixed foursomes competitioii. Players may choose their own partners, opponents and times, and golfing vistors are invited to participate. A dance to mark the opening of the season, will be held in the clubroom in the evening.

Stock Sale Concelled The sale of Galatea estate stoclc which was to have taken place on Monday afternoon at the Ngongotaha sale yards, has been cancelled, by the agents ,the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. Workers Educational Association. Members of the Rotorua Workers' Educational Association will hold their annual meeting in the Citizens Club on Wednesday next at 7.30 p.m. All past members and others interested are invited to attend. Included in the agenda paper are the selection of subjects for the coming winter session and the election of officers. Giant Chrysanthemum Blooms Two exceptionally fine chrysanthemum specimen blooms grown in Rotorua were shown to a "Post" representative yesterday. One ''Golden Champion," measured 13 inches across and the other "Mrs. Wilks," was very nearly as large. The blooms were grown in her garden by Mrs. Tyson, of Toko Street. Miniature Rifle Club. A meeting of the committee of tbe Rotorua Miniature Rifle Club was held last night, when a programme f or the season was drawn up and arrangements finalised for the opening night on Monday.

Badminton at Whakatane The annual meeting of the Whakatane Badminton Club was held on Wednesday night when Mr. G. Adler presided, writes our Whakatane correspondent. Mr. L. Prideanx was elected president and Miss K. White, j secretary. Owing to the large num- j ber of new players joining the club ) it was decided to defer the election j of a committee until later in the sea- j son. Huge Haul of Fish. Though it was made more than 15 years ugo, a haul of fish at the Chatham Islands, made by Mr. Henry Grennell, of Port Levy, when he resided there, has never since been beaten. Mr. Grennell landed lton 41ewt of blue cod between 6.45 a.m. and 1.45 p.m., fishing alone, and with two lines, with four hoolcs on each. Though this seems like a fish story, says the Christchurch Times, there are many who can remember Mr. Grennells' record catch.

Quest for Gold. The prospecting business is booming on the West Coast. Quietly and nnobstrusively men who have been searching for gold in the backblocks of the Westport and Buller district? are making their way to Christchurch again and buying tools for future work. There is a subdued satisfae tion about some of these prospectors. and one prominent Christchurch builder has been heard to remark that he would not now take £2000 for the quarter-share in a claim that he tcok up a few weeks ago, and for which he paid £50.
