YEAR'S PROGRAMME

USE OF APERTURE SIGHTS AND SLINGS TO BE PERMITTED MANY KEEN RIFLEMEN

"Your committee is pleased to report that its open'ng season, which concluded on March 31, 1930, proved very successful both financially and socially," said the committee's report to the annual general meeting of the Rotorua Miniature Rifle Club. "The enthusiasm of members was such that the continued success of the club seems assured." The report stated that a total of 53 financial members were enrolled and that, with few exceptions, all members had taken part in regular shooting matches on the range. The committee felt obliged to place on record the fact that the formation of the club was inspired by a number of young enthusiasts who, under the young enthusiasts who, under the leadership of Staff-Sergt.-Major W. Bates, originally functioned as the Arawa Rifle Club. Subsequently as the result of increased interest in the sport, especially by the Returned Soldiers' Association, the Rotorua Miniature Rifle Club was formed incorporating the Arawa and R.S.A. clubs. The club's shooting activities for the first season were confined to the use of open sights and conditions similar to military service regulations. Although that form of shooting was most instructive and useful, it differed from that which was generally carried out by miniature rifle clubs. in New Zealand. For the forthcoming season, however, it was intended to introduce the use of aperture sights and slings, which might be fitted to any .22 non-repeating rifle, and to conduct competitions under appr )- priate miniature rifle club conditions. With regret, the committee placod on record the retirement from the club of Mr C. L. Knight, who as chairman of the first management committee had taken an active part in the operations of the first season. The following supporters were thanked for trophies presented to the club and which were greatly apjireciated: R.M. Transport Co., Ltd., Mr. H. Hardcastle, Mr. Winslade, Mr.. Whitley, Mr. Macdermott and Mr. A. Merriman.
