RAILWAY PLANTATION
PROPOSAL TO LEASE PORTION TO ANOTHER OIL COMPANY COUNCIL DISCUSSION "We did not want another corrugated iron fence plastered with benzine advert:sements,' stuck on the main street," said the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) at last evening's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council when explaining a previous council's attitude toward a proposal to lease a portion of the railway plantation to a benzine company. The discussion arose when a letter was received from the district engineer of the Railway Department, Auckland, advising that the Department proposed leasing an area adjacent to the existing oil company's premises, to a second company. A plan attached, showed that it was proposed to construct a 30 foot right of way giving access to the area in question, or alternatively to lease an area with a two chain frontage to Fenton Street. The opinion was expressed, after a brief discussion; that the frontage appeared to be larger than was necessary and it was suggested that if the company in question proposed to use portion of this frontage for advertising purposes, the council should advocate that it be reduced. It was f:nally decided to communicate with the Railway Department suggesting that the frontage leased to the company should be reduced to' 15 feet.
