SUCCESSFUL MEETING CHAMPION RUNNER DEFEATS GREYHOUND INNOVEL % HANDICAP STRONG FIELDS COMPETE
WHAKATANE, Monday. The ninth annual meeting of the -Bay of Plenty Sports Club was held in ideal weather to-day on the Whakatane Domain. The attendance was helow last year's, but the nominations for all events were a record for the club. All events were held with good entries, and the meeting was financially a great success, especially in view of the present depression. The outstanding performer of the meeting was Mr. • J. E. Shaw, the veteran runner, who carried off the main event, the Whakatane Gift Handicap and the Bay of Plenty Sports' Club Handicap. An event which created unusual interest was the competition between Whakatane's champion runner, R. Bridger, and Mr. F. Johnsen's Greyhound racer "Tasman." In this event Bridger was given 40 yards start and beat the dog by two yards. The times compared well, Bridger doing the 60 yards in the remarkable time of 6sec, while "Tasman" did the 100 yards in 6 2-5sec. The track was in splendid condition, and much praise must he given to the excellent work carried out by the committee and its active president, Mr. F. Moneur. There seems no doubt that the Bay of Plenty meeting has increased very much in its standard, and is well on its way to being one of the best meetings in the North Island. Competitors from all over the North Island competed, and although the local competitors had to give way to a lot of their visitors, yet the visitors will have to look to their laurels in the future.
The cycle events were marred to an extent by the mishap to J. Millier, of Gisborne, who, owing to Cleaver ik:dding in the Mile Handicap, coliided with h'm, and sustained a brokcn co'larbone. Millier was taken to the Whakatane Hospital, but after treatment returned to the course to watch the last events. Results : — County Handicap, 100yds (locaU. — First heat : J. Stewart, 5yds, 1; I.
