USE OF UNEMPLOYED LABOUR FOR ERADTC ATION SCHEME MR. CLINKARD'S PROPOSAL Mr. C. H. Clinkard, member of Parliament for Rotorua, some time ago suggested to the Minister in Charge of Unemployment, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, that, in view of the rapid spread of ragwart throughout this and adjacent districts, and the urgent nece^sitv to utilise t.ie services of unemployed men engag .1 on rel'ef work as far as possibie in productive chann Is, arrangements should be made to carry out a comprehensive scheme of ragwort eradication as the pest had become a serious economic problem to the farraers. Since then Mr. Clinkard has been in communication on the matter with the Minister and he has now received from Mr Coates a letter ind'cating that concerted steps are bsing takm by the various Departments interested -and the Unemployment Board in an effort to place r: lief workers on work of this nature .The text of the Minister's letter is as follows: "Your letter of the 2nd. instant, concerning proposals for a comprehensiVe scheme for the eradication of ragwart by util'sing unemployed labour oii this class of work has been leferred to me by my colleague, the Minister of Lands. "In reply I have to state that a conf. rence recently took place between representatives of the Unemployment Board, the Agriculture De-par-tment and other Government departments in connection with this mal- . fcer, with the result that arrangements . are now being made for various oe'partments to co-op rate fully with t.ie board in an endeavour to place reliei workers on th's class of work wber • ev v pnFsible." : * When handing the Minister's 1 tter to the "Post" yesterday, Mr Clir; kard said that he r.nturally was plet sed by the suceess so far of his elfor-s. Asked what method it was proposed tp- employ, Mr Clinkard said he had ' not so far received information on the point, but he was confident that if •the job .was undertaken, it would be • done thoroughly.
