HOLIDAY CRICKET

ROTORUA V. AUCKLAND home batsmen score well after slow start N. HINTON'S FINE DISPLAY A cricket match between tbe Auckland Suburban Association team and the Rotorua representatives! was commenced aLthe Government grounds, yesterday afternoon , intermittent showers during the early part of the game making conditions rather unpleasant for players and spectators. Rotorua had first use of the wicket, Kelly and Corbett opening the innings at 2.10 p.m. Blakely opened the attack for the visitors, his first delivery to Kelly going for a bye. Off his sixth delivery the bowler obtained Corbett's wicket, the batsman playing a rising ball on to his wicket. McGill joined Kelly, but runs came very slowly, both batsmen being content to play themselves in. McGill gave two "lives" qprly in his innings, an uppish stroke to point off Robertshaw being just out of the fieldsman's reach, and the other, a eatchj being missed at square leg. Despite the fact that frequent showers made conditions difficult for the bowlers, who bad called for sawdust, the batsmen were unable to make use of the advantage, only ten' runs being credited for the first half hour's play. Thirty nine runs had been scored when Kelly, who had earlier given a chance to point, was smartly stumped) by Peebles. He had scored 11 runs as a result of a very patient iimings. When partnered by N. Hinton, McGill began to score more quickly, good running between the wickets producing many valuable "singles." Both batsmen were now displaying good strokes, particularly _ Hinton, who, combining perfect defence with a ggressive treatment of anything "loose," was quickly overhauling his partner's total. The third wicket partnership between McGill and Hinton produced 108 runs, the former being out to a catch by Fawcett at mid-off from a short pitched ball from Peebles. Although he had given a drab display early in his innings, McGill's 70 runs were invaluable to his side as a -means of taking the "sting" out of the visitors' bowling. Beaumont, who followed McGiH, was at the out^st badly at fault with his timing, but later settled down and compiled a useful 17 runs before being caught and bowled by Robertshaw. Four wickets bad fallen for 190 runs, and only one more run had been added when at 5.40 p.m. an appeal against the light was upheld, the not-out men being Hinton, 75 ruris, and Ellis, who had not opened his account. The match will be continued at 11 a.m. to-day.
