TWO OUTRAGES

NATIVE ATTACKS WIVES OF OFFICERS AT HONOLULU HONOLULU, Saturday. Another attack of hysteria has broken out as a result of a native, believed to be a half-caste Chinese, having attacked the wives of two naval men. It is the first outbreak of this class of crime since a high official declared Honolulu 'to be unsafe for the wives of navy men. Mrs. John Hope, 35, wffe of a maehiriist's mhte, was blind-folded, bound with silk stockings and gagged. The attacker then went next door and held up Mrs. Curry, a pretty bride of 20. He menaced her with a revolver. Neither woman can give a clear description of the assailant. Much speculation continues as to the outcome of the Fortescue-Massie trial. The feeling grows that the attorneys for the defence may have a difncult task on their hands. Mr. Clarence Darrow, who was invited to undertake the defence, has, as yet, made no sign of acceptance of a retainer. All America was stirred by a criminal outrage committed upon Mrs. Massie, wife of Lieutenant Massie, of I the U.S. Navy, allegedly by a native, Kahahawai. Lieutenant Massie, Mrs. Fortescue (mother of Mrs. Massie, and well known in New York society), and two American blue-jackets are charged with having caused Kahahawai's death by mutilation. The outrage upon Mrs. Massie necessitated some months later an important operation. Mr. Clarence Darrow gained nationwide prominence in the United States as a result of the part he played in the Dayton evolution trial.
