TELEPHONE RATES
REQUEST IN PARLIAMENT FOR REDUCTIONS REFUSED WELLINGTON, Wednesday. In the House of Representatives to-day Mr. R. Semple (Labour, Wellington East), asked the PostmasterGeneral), the Hon. A. Hamilton, whether, in view of the fact that many business people and private subscribers, at great disadvantage to themselves, were being eompelled to have their telephones disconneeted on account of reduced incomes, and that this represents in many cases a loss of business, he would consider tlie ad/isability or reducing the present exeessive rates. "Telephone connections are at present upon the lowest possible basis having regard to the cost of affording the service," replied Mr. Hamilton. "It is not considered that they are in any way exeessive and that irt point of fact bear favourable comparison with those of other countries having any claim to progress in telephone matters. To reduce the rentals of the subscriber by even 5/- per annum would result in a loss of some £30,000. It will be obvious that such' a loss at present could not be reaspnably contemplated."
