NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. Christian de Rinlce, who met De-. j;ective Meiklejoh'n "and Constable' To.cker with a n'gun when these officers 'went to arrest him at Tikorangi last week, 'ap^eared ifi the * Pqjice Court on a charge' that, with intenit to resist qiTest, he attempted to discharge at the ofiicers a douhle barrelled shotgun. De Rinke pleaded not guilty and was remanded to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being granted, self in £200, and tw'o suyeties of £20.0 each. Deteetiye Meiklejohn descyibed how he anc^ Constable Tocker visiled de Rinke's house for the puppose of his arrest on a false pr.etences charge. After they had waited for some hours de Rinke appeared, but arrived with a shotgqn. He shouted to them " not to come riear' or he would shoot. He I said he would not be taken alive. The detective advanced and de Rinke bolted. Ife returned a quarter of an hour later andj again met the ofiicers wRh the gun. The constable engaged de Rinke ip cqpyersatiqn while detective slo^yly edged up to him, finally elosing with him. During the proceedings I the gun was discharged, but no one was injur.ed. After a fierce struggle de Rinke was tak;en to, New Plymouth in a can. A Maori neighbour gave evid'ence that he le'nt tbe gun to de Rinke, os(;ensibly to shoot hares.
