PERIOD OF TAXATION "INDEFINITELY EXTENDED WOMEN TO PAY ("Post" Special Commissioner) WELLINGTON, last night. I The long awaited Unemployment Bill was introduced in the' House of Representatives to-night and read the the first time. jPart one of the Bill makes provision for the settlement of unemployed •vyorkers on areas of cultivable land. In so far as person? settled oh the land j are not able to provide adequate sustenance for themselves and their famI ilies, they ' may receive a sustenance allowance out of the unemployment fuiicis. or be sppplied with necesSaries. The Minister in Charge of Unemployment, is empowered to enter into an agreement in respect of land taken over by unemployed workers and in the event of no agreement heing reached he may acquire land under the iPublic Works Act, the purchase price to he * paid out of funds provided under the Ac^. Provision is made for placing buildings on the land and a^° for water, lighting and drainage and other necessities.
The rate of the unemployment j charge on salaries wages and other emoluments is increased from one penny for every 6/8 to threepence on every five shillings. Power is taken to reduce by Order-in-Council the rate of the eniergepcy charge of 5/- a quarter if t^e pro- I ! ceeds of the charge are more than sufiicient to meet the reasonable requiremen^s of the unemployment fund. The period during which the tax must he paid i's extended indeiinitely and the tax on 'incomes otlier than salaries or wages is' now to be paid in respect of the whole of the inqome instead of oii one-third as provided in the principal Act. Women who have derived income other than salaries or wages, are to be liable for the tax in respect of inc.omes .exceeding £20. The Board is given power to exempt, on the grounds of hardship, any person from his liability to pay the tax or any pqrtion of it.
