BROWN SPONGE CAKE.

One egg, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 small cup sugar, 1 tablespoon golden syrup, 1 level cup flour, i small cup milk with 1 teaspoon soda dissolved in it, 1 small teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Cream butter andf sugar, add golden syrup and mix well; then well beaten egg. Sift dry ingredients together and add to mixture alternately with milk and soda. Bake in a' moderate oven in fiat tin about 25 minutes or in sandwich tins i-hour. Filliug. — • Half cup milk, boil with 1 tablespoon cornflour, let get cold. Beat 1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon sugar and few drops vanilla essence together; then add cornflour mixture, a little at a time. Beat well between each addition. — Mrs. S. J.
